Runway FAQs

July 20th, 2023

Runway is the third program offered by TRAM that provides hands-on, experiential education that supports our research entrepreneurs as they delve deeper into confirming their market fit. The 12-week program is designed to help researchers strengthen their team capabilities, connect them with a whole network of expert advisors and mentors, and provide top-tier coaching that assists them in making well-informed decisions that accelerate their research impact.

Uncover the answers to all your Runway questions here:

Q: Who can apply for the Runway program?

A: Any University of Melbourne or Biomedical Precinct Teams of researchers who have developed a solution to a problem, have explored their customer and value proposition, and are ready to explore the next steps of their idea.

Q: I’m a Master's student at the University of Melbourne, am I eligible to apply?

A: Whilst it's not the norm, we have accepted Master's students in the past. If you feel you are sufficiently progressed, please do get in touch. Alternatively, a good first step into the research impact space would be to do our TRAMx BootCamp.

Q: I haven’t worked out what form my IP is yet, does this impact my eligibility?

A: No, but it is good to check in with your faculty Business Development or Knowledge Tech Transfer person to discuss your IP situation.

Q: What if I want to see my research come to life, but I don’t want to be a CEO?

A: That's completely fine! There are so many pathways for bringing research to life and many roles within that.

Q: What if I’m the only one on my research team that wants to go through the Runway program?

A: That doesn’t preclude you, but it is an advantage to be in a team. We can help you to understand the gaps in your team, and ways to fill out your required skills.

Q: How many people from my research team are allowed to participate?

A: Teams of 2 or 3 are usual but can be larger. Depends on what value each member would get out of the TRAM Runway program. Most importantly we encourage everyone on the team to attend all Program sessions rather than just an individual.

Q: How much time commitment is involved in the Runway program?

At least 0.2 or one day total a week for 12 weeks. Program delivery is on Tuesday mornings.

Q: Do I (or my whole team) have to be living in Melbourne to participate?

A: TRAM Runway 2023 is a face-to-face program. Those participating are probably better off to be here living in Melbourne (we can only imagine those flight costs if you didn't...).

Q: What should I expect to gain/learn from participating in Runway?

A: You will explore the question of is my idea a business (or social enterprise) and what that or other pathways may look like. By the end of the program, you will be equipped to establish and test a business model that can allow your research to have maximum impact.

Q: Do I have to get participation signed off by my HOD/HOS/HOF?

A: Yes.

Q: Do I need to have a Limited company to go through the Runway program?

A: No, Runway is normally pre-company formation stage, but if you have a company already that is fine too.
